Comments:	WAO are conducting a review of the management of sickness absence across NHS Wales (following up an earlier report by the Auditor General for Wales in January 2004). This project is also linked to the development of the WAO’s good practice exchange website which contains a range of material on sickness absence including case studies from across the public sector http://www.wao.gov.uk/goodpracticeexchange.asp. The work is being delivered in a two phase approach with trusts having been asked to complete a questionnaire return in May/June 2007 outlining action taken in response to the Auditor General’s previous recommendations. Short two-day visits and interviewing are taking place in August/September 2007 with a view to all work being complete and reported locally by the end of November 2007. The findings and conclusions from local reviews will be collated to produce an all Wales report and recommendations early in 2008. This report shall be considered by the Audit Committee of the National Assembly for Wales.
