The Delivery and Support Unit (DSU) was requested by Gwent NHS Trust to undertake a review of the
Day Surgery Services at the Royal Gwent NHS Trust. This report constitutes the first part of this process
and covers the following key aspects:
• Key findings from a diagnostic review of the Day Surgery Services provided across the Trust sites
• Summary of current performance and identification of the key issues/challenges preventing
achievement of the National Day Surgery Performance Targets
• Outline of the Day Surgery Service Improvement Action Plan for the Trust, including the speciality
specific priority plan.
The DSU was made aware of the fact that Royal Gwent Day Surgery Unit was closing for three months
for refurbishment in July 2007. The Trust contingency plan during the closure was to use fallow lists
which were not back-filled in main theatres for day surgery activity. This Trust plan was high risk and
would not ensure consistent day surgery activity. This report offers recommendations and a more
robust plan for maintaining day surgery activity and achieving the national targets. |
