The call to needle target is a jointly owned target between the Welsh Ambulance Service NHS Trust (WAST) and acute Trusts. It was introduced in Annual Operating Framework (AoF) of 2008/09 and states:
“70% of patients with myocardial Infarction suitable for thrombolysis will have a call to needle time of less than 60 minutes.”
The AoF states that sites with performance levels of <55% against the call to needle target require Delivery and Support Unit (DSU) intervention and support. The All Wales position regarding performance against the call to needle target was outside of the agreed thresholds in Quarter 3 (2007/08). With respect to the MINAP data for Quarter 3 (2007/08), the All Wales position was reported to be 48%. The DSU were alerted to the first choice of hospital sites for intervention by the respective regional offices and WAST has been included in the service reviews also at a regional level.
The DSU approach has involved interviewing relevant staff at hospital sites and the ambulance trust. The hospital sites identified for intervention are also providing the DSU with weekly information reports relating to the performance against the 60-minute target. This information is being used to inform the service reviews and for monitoring purposes. |
